Hydraulic Crane Repairs in Kent, the Midlands and the South of England | Common Faults with Lorry Loader Cranes

By the nature of their operation, lorry loader cranes experience heavy use day in, day out. Whether it’s delivering building supplies and plant to a construction site or recovering a broken down vehicle, the loads your crane lifts will eventually cause wear and tear. Owing to the type of operations involved, undiagnosed and unrectified faults with cranes pose a significant risk to personal safety. These problems can have serious, even fatal, consequences.

At South East Cranes, we provide a full range of services, including hydraulic crane repairs, servicing and maintenance. With over 100 years of shared experience as a PM and HMF crane dealer, our team designs, builds and repairs lorry loader cranes for customers across the South of England, including:

  • Bedfordshire

  • Berkshire

  • Buckinghamshire

  • Cambridgeshire

  • Essex

  • Hampshire

  • Kent

  • Oxfordshire

  • Surrey

  • Sussex

In this blog, we look at 3 common faults we find with lorry loader cranes.

Hydraulic Crane Repairs | 3 Common Faults

Subframe Assemble

Unlike the meticulous team at South East Cranes, less attentive lorry loader owners often overlook the crane’s subframe. As part of our battery of inspections, we visually check the crane mounting’s subframe, as well as the lorry’s chassis, for signs of cracking, corrosion and other damage.

We then inspect all the bolts and fastenings that attach the crane to the subframe, and the subframe to the lorry. This ensures that no features are coming loose.

Failures in the subframe can have disastrous consequences for any person in the vicinity. Likewise, a failure while the vehicle is in transit could also cause a major road traffic accident.

Hydraulic Leaks

Whether it’s a leak at the pipe union or a rupture inside the hydraulic pump, leaks can cause multiple problems. For example, a suspended load can either descend too slowly or, even worse, uncontrollably. What’s more, the hydraulic motor and pump may overheat and fail while trying to keep a load elevated.

Whatever the specifics of the situation, it invariably causes huge inconvenience and increases the risk of property damage and personal injury.

To avoid such outcomes, we regularly assess the hydraulic system’s condition. This allows us to catch minor issues as and when they arise. In turn, our company can perform the necessary hydraulic crane repairs with the absolute minimum in downtime and delays.

Hoist Ropes

As you would expect with machinery that consistently lifts heavy loads, the hoist ropes on lorry loader cranes are susceptible to breaking. Of course, failure with this feature, the anchorage points or the attached lifting hook represents an immediate danger to all people and property in the immediate area.

South East Cranes conducts regular inspections of hoist ropes and the wider system to ensure safe operation. Should we identify an issue, no matter how small, we undertake the relevant repairs.

Our company takes pride in being the trusted choice for hydraulic crane repairs, servicing and maintenance in the South of England. We work with clients in Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex.
